Property investment 'becomes a family business'

Property investors are viewing the sector as a family business, new research finds, with 70 per cent of professional landlords having joined with spouses, partners and children for their investments.

Standard Life Bank said that the trend was occurring across the UK, with landlords in London the most likely to team up with a husband or wife (58 per cent) and those in the north the most likely to work alongside their children or other family members (12 per cent).

"We're seeing entire generations of families investing in property and working together to achieve goals, build a business and make a profit," commented marketing manager at Standard Life Bank Ashley Ramsay.

While 24 per cent of UK landlords say they became property investors "by chance", through an inheritance windfall, 32 per cent claim that they are looking to secure their financial future through property investment.

Meanwhile, a further 22 per cent are looking to build a sustainable and profitable business by being landlords, with 69 per cent of the 750 landlords questioned using their rental income as their main source of earnings or to plan for the future.

Alliance & Leicester predicts that the buy-to-let mortgage market, a kind of mortgage favoured by many landlords, will grow by 40 per cent in the next ten years.
