Average house price overtakes £200,000 mark
New figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) show that the average UK house price has passed the £200,000 mark.
Annual house price inflation was driven up from 8.8 per cent to 9.9 per cent from November to December 2006, bringing the average UK house price up to £201,090, the official figures reveal.
The biggest house price rises were seen in Northern Ireland in 2006, with house prices growing by a considerable 39.9 per cent.
Meanwhile, London led house price rises in England and Wales with price inflation of 11.8 per cent, bringing the average property price to £296,160, making it the most expensive region.
Buy-to-let investors may choose instead to cast their eyes to the north-east, the best place to invest in a low-priced property in the UK according to the data, with an average house price of £146,183.
Economist at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Oliver Gilmartin commented: "With average house prices breaking the £200,000 mark in December, the housing market has breached a psychological barrier which will further the woes of first-time buyers."
